Estuaries, as the transition zones of the worldâ s fresh and marine waters are among the most prominent ectones on earth. Among the definitions given by various scientists, the most appropriate one is that of Pritchard (1967) which states that â an estuary is a semienclosed coastal body of water, which has a free conection with the open sea and within which the sea water is measurably diluted with fresh water, derived from the land drainageâ ?. Although, estuary retains some characteristics of both fresh water and marine environment, it exhibits unique properties of its own. Some of these unique properties are common to all estuaries of the world; others are determined by local condition so that each estuary has its own individual and special characteristics.
