Performance of potato varieties under varying nitrogen levels for yield, quality and storability traits of seed tuber
(G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar-263145 (Uttarakhand), 2015-07) Girish Chandra; Manoj Raghav
The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the “Performance of potato varieties under varying nitrogen levels for yield, quality and storability traits of seed tuber” at Vegetable Research Centre of G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar (Uttarakhand) during rabi season of 2012-2013 and 2013-14. The experiment was conducted in two factor randomized block design with three replications. The experiment consisted of five levels of nitrogen viz., 0 (N0), 75 (N1), 150 (N2), 225 (N3) and 300 (N4) kg/ha and two varieties viz., Kufri Sadabahar (V1) and Kufri Surya (V2) taken as treatments. The response of potato with respect to different treatments was measured in terms of growth, yield, quality, storability and economic parameters. Two year investigation revealed that the varieties show non significant effect on most of growth parameters except plant height at 60 and 75 days after planting and dry weight of plant. The higher plant height at 60 and 75 days after planting was recorded with variety Kufri Sadabahar and dry weight of plant was recorded higher with variety Kufri Surya (V2). The number of seed tubers (590.92 thousand/ha), seed tuber yield (20.86 t/ha), total number of tubers (1122.28 thousand/ha) and total tuber yield (38.24 t/ha) was recorded higher with variety Kufri Surya (V2). Varieties show non significant variation for most of the quality and storability traits of seed tubers except reducing sugar content and physiological weight loss of tubers at 90 days after storage for these traits variety Kufri Surya (V2) perform better than variety Kufri Sadabahar (V1). Generally, growth and yield parameters increased significantly upto application of 150 kg N/ha (N2). Variety Kufri Surya (V2) with application of 150 kg N/ha (N2) perform better as compare to other treatments in relation to number of seed tuber (738.73 thousand/ha), seed tuber yield (27.13 t/ha), total tuber yield (47.34 t/ha), total nitrogen uptake (199.05 kg/ha) and benefit: cost ratio (2.75 and 3.76 in two years, respectively). The storability of seed tubers is better at N0 level of nitrogen application (0 kg N/ha) than other treatments, while different quality traits differ in their performance with application of varying nitrogen levels. On the basis of experimental results it was concluded that the variety Kufri Surya was better for seed tuber yield and higher net returns. Among various nitrogen levels, 150 kg N/ha found to be best for both the varieties, but yield potential of variety Kufri Surya was 7.37 % higher than Kufri Sadabahar.
