Experimental study of mechanical and thermal properties of Bhimal fiber reinforced epoxy bio-composite
(G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar - 263145 (Uttarakhand), 2017-07) Upreti, Bikraj; Chaudhary, A.K.
Bio-composites are putting forth a concentrated effort in almost every engineering field due to their cost viability and biodegradable nature. In a huge variety of natural fibers, bhimal fiber is a very promising fiber that still needs to be explored as an engineering material, because it has very rarely been used by researchers in their research work. Bhimal fiber is a cellulosic fiber extracted from the stems of bhimal tree. It has a great tensile strength and flexibility. In present work bhimal fiber reinforced epoxy bio-composite was successfully prepared by hand lay-up casting technique in order to examine its mechanical and thermal properties for varying content of bhimal fiber ( i.e. 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 weight % ). Before the preparation of composite, the surface of bhimal fiber was treated with potassium hydroxide to improve its adhesion properties. From the experiments it was observed that while increasing the fiber content up to 5 wt%, the tensile, flexural and compressive strength continuously increased then started decreasing. Similarly hardness and impact strength were also observed to be increasing up to a peak value at 4 wt% of bhimal fiber. All these results were supported by the SEM, TGA and DTA results. From the observations, it has been concluded that the bhimal fibers are lighter in weight than all existing fibers and strength to weight ratio of the bhimal fiber reinforced epoxy bio-composite is quite higher than the other conventionally used natural fiber based composites. Hence these can be used as reinforcement to produce much lighter weight bio-composites.

Development of quality audit templates for monitoring and improvement of quality & performance of a process
(G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar - 263145 (Uttarakhand), 2017-08) Pramod Kumar; Ajay
A major of portion of economy of our nation comes from Indian agriculture and unorganized industrial sector. A major percentage of Indian agriculture is also being carried out in an ill articulated and unorganized manner leading to small land size, loss of crop, lower yield, unavailability of potential market, untimely operations, and pressure of debt on farmers. Main features of unorganized working are no accounting, unplanned working, no record keeping, poor efficiency, waste generation, etc. The same mistakes are kept on repeating resulting to cumulative financial loss and failure of the system. Presently implementation of GST and other measures taken by the government are forcing to all business organization to maintain their records properly & pay taxes. This is possible only when organizations which belong to unorganized sector will turn to become organized by virtue of their working procedure. In this work suitability of use of existing quality control tools is examined for this purpose their associated difficulties are pointed out. It is purposed to use quality audit templates in addition to other quality control tool to make the unorganized sector an organized one. This can maintain proper records, reduction of waste and improvement of efficiency. This also enables the organizations to pay taxes in proper manner for national growth. This work includes development of three quality audit templates, self monitoring quality audit template, performance audit template, customized quality audit template. The logical procedure of development of these templates using related input information is described in results and discussion. It is recommended that the same procedure can be applied to develop other similar audit templates. Analysis of templates to draw fruitful conclusions for process improvement is also described. This description also includes important factors stating the possibility of failure of use of these templates. Use of the templates is recommended for achieving objectives of efficiency and performance improvement and turning the working of unorganized sector into an organized one.
