One of the major problems, faced by the hilly terrains of India is of slope failure resulting in landslides or downhill mass movement. Slope instability is identified as one of the most frequent natural disasters in hill states that leads to not only loss of human life, livestock, property or the infrastructure but also disrupts the routine life of the inhabitants and commercial/industrial growth. Such a geo-dynamic process often results in the blockage of the roads/highways, cutting the supply chain of routine goods to uphill areas and makes the rescue operation more difficult. It is worthwhile to reiterate here that landslides are persistent in nature and recur every year at slide prone areas. Uttarakhand is one of such states which is adversely affected by the incidents of slope failures. The problem as highlighted in the preceding paragraph raises an urge to analyze such instable slopes in hilly terrains and to discover effective measures that are not only economical but are also easy to implement in the field making use of materials/resources available locally or the nearby areas. The review of the literature reveals relatively less studies available on such critical zones of slope failures in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, despite being one of the most significant geological hazards along highway cut slopes. It is still a challenge for geotechnical engineers to prevent slope failures and minimize the losses. In view of above the study represents a comprehensive address to the persistent problem of landslides making use of new software such as Geostudio 2018 (Slope/W), numerical analysis of four slide prone sites in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. The remedial and preventive measures for instable slopes and also suggested after a critical review of literature in order to minimize the losses reoccurring every year.
