    Dynamics of fish-duck integrated aquafarming in tarai region of Uttaranchal

    The study was conducted in two rectangular earthen ponds of the size of 0.5 ha each. Six species of carps namely, Catla catla, Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Ctenopharyngodon idella and Cyprinus carpio were stocked @ 10,000/ha. One of the pond was completed integrated with duck-culture, for which duck house made of bamboo was erected over the pond for housing of 300 nos of day old duckling of “Khaki Campbell” variety. All the excreta and spilled over duck feed from duck house fell directly to the duck-fish pond. No artificial feeding was done to experimental fishes. No drastic deviation from the acceptable range of water quality parameter was recorded in duck-fish integrated pond. The plankton valued enhanced gradually towards the end of the study. The spilled over duck feed amount 14.376%of the feed given to the ducks. Total quantity of 5052.48 kg duck dropping (amounting to 23051.94 kg/ha/yr) was added recycled in duck-fish pond. The calculated amount of nitrogen (314.66 kg), phosphorus (228.37 kg), potassium (82.987 kg) and organic carbon (2881.50 kg) per ha/yr got entry to duck-fish pond through recycling of duck excreta which helped in maintaining a healthy population of fish food organisms in the pond and enrichment of soil of pond bottom. Average survival of 92% in ducks and 71.57% in fishes was observed. Production to the tune of 1259.82 kg fish (5039.28 kg/ha/yr) and 449.052 kg ducks (1796.21 kg/ha/yr) could be obtained from the duck fish pond while only 1178.8 kg fish (4715.2 kg/ha/yr) was recovered from control pond. It is inferred that integrated duck fish farming is economically profitable, technologically sound and environmentally congenial farming practice which also helps in the abatement of environment pollution, employment generations and product diversification.
