(G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar - 263145 (Uttarakhand), 2020-12) Nautiyal, Ramesh Chandra; Sharma, Arpita
Potato is a cash crop that provides significant income to farmers. Potato is considered one of the most important food crops in the world, and it ranks third in terms of human consumption after rice and wheat. About 86 per cent of the land area of Uttarakhand is hilly. The life of the farmers in this region is challenging. Mainly small farmers are found here who depend on agriculture to meet the needs of their families. Only 14 per cent of the state's land is flat, this area mainly consists of Tarai region where farmers have good land which is useful for agriculture, but farmers of this region have to face a variety of problems such as lack of knowledge of modern techniques, High cost of input for potato cultivation, Lack of availability of sufficient good quality planting material, Enough fertilizer not available on time, Lack of scientific knowledge about potato cultivation, Unavailability of cold storage etc. The ratio of extension worker to farmer is wide due to which information gap prevails. Therefore, there is need for alternatives that can bridge the information gap. Today is ICT era and there are different media like print, electronic, which can be used to fill the information gap. Out of all these print media was used for present study to analyze the effectiveness of participatory newsletter on potato farming was tested. The present study was conducted in Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand. The three villages (Jaitpurghosi, Rajpurarani, and Dhanauri) from Kashipur block were selected purposively for this study. Action research approaches using experimental research design was used for the present study. Sample of total 120 respondents was selected purposively who were actively engaged in potato farming. Pre-tested interview schedule and knowledge test were used for data collection. Statistical techniques such as frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation and paired‘t’-test were used to analyze the data for meaning interpretation. The findings of the present study revealed that majority of the respondents (67.50%) belonged to middle age group, had education high school level (32.50%), had 1-5 acres of land holding (53.40%), were having low annual income (61.60%), potato farming was a primary source of income, had medium experience in potato farming (71.70%), had medium scientific orientation (55%), half of respondents (50.80%) had medium extent of utilization of information sources, 59.20 per cent of the respondents had medium level of extension contact. The respondents needed information regarding insect pest and disease management, application of manure and fertilizer, and selection of variety. Regarding the size, design, name, content, need based information, utility of content, accuracy and clarity of message and readability of content found satisfactory by majority of respondents. At 0.01 per cent level of significance, mean gain in knowledge score of respondents was significantly higher in post- test. It was concluded that the participatory newsletter for potato growers was found to be effective in terms of gain in knowledge. The findings of the study will be useful for extension workers, research workers, and the administrators as it will provide them sufficient knowledge about the problems of potato growers and the use of mass media by potato growers and will enable them to improve their approach while working with the farmers.

Print media was the first media to be used for spreading information to the masses. It is the most reachable, accessible and followed media among all other media. Smooth and easy transfer of information can effectively be achieved with the help of print media, thus newspapers are considered as one of the important information source for different people on varying aspects. Newspapers have got a huge control in the grass root levels of the country as they have got a great responsibility in providing relevant information timely. Different types of information are published in a newspaper, one among them is agricultural information which is published especially for farmers and rural people. The present study was done to understand whether the agricultural information printed in newspaper is appropriate and utilised by farmers and how much area in a newspaper is solely dedicated to the information related to agriculture. The study was undertaken for the Kumaon division of Uttarakhand. Udham Singh Nagar district was selected purposively since it had the maximum circulation of the newspaper Amar Ujala. A total sample of 120 respondents was selected through PPS method. Analytical and descriptive research design was used. The data collection was done using a pre-tested structured interview schedule. The data was analysed using appropriate analytical and descriptive statistical techniques. The findings revealed that more than half (65.84%) of the respondents were found to be in middle age group with maximum respondents (36.67%) educated up to high school, had medium sized family (85.83 %) and low annual income (77.5%). Maximum respondents (45%) had small-medium sized landholding, had low level of social participation (92.5%), and had medium extension contact (69.16%) and medium leisure time (76.67%) ranging from two to four hours. Majority of the respondents had medium innovativeness (64.17%), had medium scientific orientation (75%) with medium level of mass media exposure (73.34%). Regarding the coverage of agricultural information in the newspaper, findings revealed that only 2.39 per cent area in the newspaper was provided for it. The dependent variable perceived utility of agricultural information by farmers was found to be in medium category (74.17 %) for majority of the respondents. The agricultural information was found to be easy to read by the farmers and they enjoy reading the information in newspaper. The results revealed that independent variables education, leisure time, scientific orientation and mass media exposure were found to have positive significant relationship with perceived utility of the agricultural information. Age, family size, annual income and land holding were found to have a negative non-significant relationship with perceived utility of the agricultural information. Social participation, extension contact and innovativeness were found to have a positive non-significant relationship with perceived utility of the agricultural information. The findings of the study would provide a basis for preparing guidelines for the news reporters, editors, extension workers while reporting and editing of the agricultural issues.

(G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar - 263145 (Uttarakhand), 2020-07) Jha, Shivani; Kashyap, S.K.
With revolution in ICT sector and increase in the possession of ICT tools and devices, it has gained wide popularity. Its users are rising exponentially over years and ICT tools are being utilized for many purposes viz. information, education and entertainment. ICT tools can be effectively used as an agricultural information source because it has a potential to make communication more collaborative through discussions and involvement. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) include technologies that give access to information through communication (Khan et al., 2012). ICTs in agriculture have the potential to facilitate greater access to information that drive or support knowledge sharing. ICTs essentially facilitate the creation, management, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of any relevant data, knowledge, and information that may have been already processed and adapted. In order to make effective use of ICT tools into agricultural information services it is necessary to know the Utilization pattern of ICT tools i.e. Accessibility of ICT tools, Extent of use of ICT tools and purpose of use of ICT tools among farm women. ICT tools can be used as a source of exchanging agricultural information. Thus, a study entitled “Utilization Pattern and Perceived Constraints Regarding Use of ICT tools Among Farm Women in Tarai Region of Uttarakhand” was undertaken to know about utilization pattern of ICT tools including accessibility, extent of use and purpose of use of ICT tools for agriculture purpose and general purpose The study was conducted in Udhamsingh nagar purposively. Rudrapur and Kashipur were selected by random sampling method for the present study. From each block, two villages were selected randomly. Rudrapur block has total of 89 villages out of which Kolaria and Chhatarpur were selected; and Kashipur has 77 village, out of which Gopipura and Chandpur were selected randomly. Thus, a total of four villages were selected to collect the data from farm women. From each village respondents were selected by using PPS. (Probability proportional to size) sampling method. According to the population of villages, 10% proportionately respondents were selected. The total number of respondents was fixed as 120 keeping in view the total number of households in the village. Ten percent households were selected and a member from each of these 10 percent households were selected which approximately rounded off to 120. Pre tested interview schedule was administered to collect data from 120 respondents and statistical methods such as mean, frequency , standard deviation , percentage, Karl Pearson’s coefficient of correlation, mean weight score, testing of significance of correlation coefficient and Garett Ranking method were used to treat the data for meaningful interpretation. Findings of the study revealed that majority of the respondents were in the age group 33-55 years. Most of farm women had small and semi-medium land area holding. Majority of farm women belonged to medium category having 8 to 30 years of farming experience, low extension agency contact, have favourable attitude towards ICT tools based extension services, low social participation. Age, education, family size, annual family income, media ownership, social participation had significant relationship with the extent of use of ICT tools. This study may help the developers to improve services provided by ICT tools and to combat the existing gaps.
