Women make up 43 percent of the worldwide agricultural labor force and 32 percent of the agricultural labor force in India. In rural India, the percentage of women who depend upon agriculture for their livelihood is as high as 84 percent (FAO, 2011). Women play a major role in domestic and socio-economic life of the rural hill areas. Agriculture is considered to be the biggest unorganized sector where a large number of hill women actively participate. Despite their enormous contribution to farming, hill women remain largely invisible as active farmers. The productivity of women in agriculture is also dependent on the opportunity to access proper information sources and their use. It was stated in CIARD, (2011) that improved access to and use of agricultural information is essential if present-day global problems such as food insecurity, climate change, sustainable and more effective use of natural resources and biodiversity are to be addressed. Thus, Agricultural information sources play an important role in agricultural development and can contribute to the welfares of women farmers. Different sources and channels of agriculture information can play significant role to meet this requirement. There is wide range of information sources available to farm women, but they lack the ability to access information sources and use them at the same level as men due to numerous reasons. Therefore a study entitled "Utilization Pattern of Agriculture Information sources by Farm Women: A Study in Kumaun region of Uttarakhand" was taken up to found the utilization pattern of information sources by farm women and also identify the key constraints which affect their utilization. The study was conducted in Ramgarh block of Nainital district of Uttarakhand .Four villages of Ramgarh block were selected purposively after consultation with Agricultural Development Officer. 120 respondents were selected from the four selected villages through PPS method, a pretested interview schedule was used for data collection. Analytical research design was used to meet the objectives of the study. The findings of the study revealed that majority of the respondents (65%) belonged to middle age group, had education upto high school (28.33%) and most of the respondents (97.5%) were married . Results further revealed that majority of respondents (87.5%) belonged to general caste, had medium family size (55%) and family type (43.33%) with medium land holding (65%) and farming experience (63.33%) ,74.16 per cent respondents family has farming +service as major occupation,87.5 per cent had medium level of annual family income, majority of respondents had medium media ownership(68.33%) and innovativeness (69.16%) and around 58.33 per cent were not a member of any organization. Regarding utilization pattern of agriculture information sources, majority of farm women (65%) had medium level of utilization pattern, with medium frequency of use (66.66%), preference (62.5%) and credibility (62.5%). Education qualification and social participation were found to have positive and significant relationship with utilization pattern at 1% level of significance; where as family type and land holding were found to have negative but significant relationship with utilization pattern at 5% level of significance. Further, age, caste, family occupation, farming experience and innovativeness had negative and non- significant relationship, while family size, annual family income and media ownership had positive and non- significant relationship with utilization pattern of agriculture information sources by farm women. The major constraints faced by farm women in utilizing the agriculture information sources were not having access to information source, use of difficult language, lack of awareness of information sources and incomplete/inadequate information were given.
