Beekeeping is an agro based activity which is being undertaken by farmers in rural area as a part of integrated farming system especially in India. Beekeeping is maintenance of honey bee colonies, commonly in hives, by humans. Honeybee products, especially honey and beeswax, are an important source of income, nutrition, and medicine, while the bees themselves play an equally or even more important role as pollinators for agriculture and natural ecosystems. Keeping in view the importance of beekeeping as a part of integrated farming system in the country there is an urgent need to adopt recommended beekeeping practices. Uttarakhand has huge potential for beekeeping due to plenty of flora and suitability of climate. Traditional beekeeping is widely practiced in hilly areas of Uttarakhand by the rural people who inherit the tradition from their forefathers and are reluctant to adopt and have little or no information about modern day practices. Due to the traditional production system the productivity per hive is low in Uttarakhand. It is therefore, necessary to promote modern recommended beekeeping practices in the area. The present study was conducted in four villages viz; Jeoli, Gaga, Baluti and Chopra. The respondents were selected through census method from Bhimtal block in Nainital district which lies in Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand. A pre tested interview schedule was used to determine the profile characteristics of the Beekeepers, extent of adoption of recommended beekeeping practices, and constraints faced by them. Relationship between independent and dependent variables were calculated using coefficient of correlation and ‘t’ test. Descriptive research design was used for the study. The findings of the study revealed that almost all the respondents interviewed were Male and majority (68.42 %) of them were in between the age of 31 to 52 years. Most of the respondents belonged to general category (96.05%) and had attended middle school and high school (35.53%) for education. Slightly less than the half of the respondents (43.43%) belonged to nuclear family system and had medium family size (81.57%). About 73.68 per cent of the respondents considered beekeeping as the primary source of income. The data reveals that majority of the respondents have medium total annual income (61.84%), medium market availability (46.05%), medium number of boxes owned (63.16%), medium level of experience in beekeeping (78.95%), medium information seeking behaviour (65.79%), medium innovativeness (56.58%), medium scientific orientation (68.42%), medium economic motivation (69.74%) and medium risk-taking ability (61.84%). It was observed that the respondents had medium extent of adoption of recommended beekeeping practices. The variables such as age, annual income, number of boxes, experience in beekeeping, innovativeness, scientific orientation had positive and significant relationship with the extent of adoption. Negative and significant relationship was observed between education and extent of adoption. There was no significant relationship between family size, economic motivation and the extent of adoption. The major constraints faced by the respondents were lack of necessary skills to adopt recommended practice, lack of trust that modern recommended practices are useful and high cost of input. The findings of the present study will be of use to extension personnel and scientists to orient their work on major thrust area which are profitable and applicable. The study will also be useful for making awareness about recommended beekeeping practices. The study reinforced previous findings which indicate that majority of the beekeepers lacked working with capital also they do not produce the best quality honey product, either they sell it directly or in comb form. It also shows that there is a need to improve the productivity of the beekeepers and it is important to adopt improved beekeeping technologies.
