The present study was carried out with the objective to analyze the economics of agro based industries in Punjab. Central zone was randomly selected for the study. Primary data were collected from 40 villages of Fatehgarh sahib district during the year 2015-16. A total number of 74 enterprises were found containing 33, 14, 15 and 12 of atta chaki, ghani oil, gur khandsari and cotton carding enterprises respectively. The study revealed that all the 74 entrepreneurs of the agro based industries were male. Only 21 (28.37%) entrepreneur were educated up to middle. The proportion of landless, marginal, small, semi medium, medium entrepreneurs were 29.72%, 14.86%, 16.21%, 27.02% and 12.16% respectively and none of the entrepreneur had large farms. Majority of the entrepreneurs (82.69%) were taking credit from institutional sources. Except fixed costs all the other costs and returns were highest in case of gur khandsari enterprise as compared to other enterprises. The gur khandsari industry had highest returns and had lowest payback period i.e. 2.13 years. The major problem as perceived by the entrepreneurs was of tough competition with large enterprises. Shortage of power, seasonal availability of raw material, shortage of labour and lack of marketing facilities were some of the other the important problems. Setting up more enterprises in villages, branding of the product and guaranteed of uninterrupted power supply may help to promote the agro based village industries in Punjab.
