Population dynamics and reproductive status of Tatera indica (Hardwicke) in relation to different growth stages of rice and wheat crops
(Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, 2019) Dhillon, Gursimran Kaur; Navdeep Kaur
Tatera indica of both the sexes were trapped during different growth stages of rice and wheat crops. The maximum total trap index of gerbils was observed during tillering stage (23.61%) of rice crop and sowing and tillering stage (11.11%) of wheat crop. The maximum percentage of mature gerbils were trapped during initial growth stages (transplanting-dough stage) of rice crop (100%) and later growth stages (panicle initiation- pre-harvest stage +lean period) of wheat crop (80-100%). The maximum percentage of pregnant gerbils were observed during tillering stage (22.22%) of rice crop and pre-harvest stage (50%) of wheat crop. The maximum weight of ovaries was recorded during tillering stage (15.00±0.003 mg/100g bw) of rice crop and pre-harvest stage (19.00±0.001 mg/100g bw) as well as lean period (19.00±0.003 mg/100g bw) of wheat crop. The weight of testes was maximum during dough stage (1.29±0.10 g/100g bw) of rice crop and pre-harvest stage (1.27±0.02 g/100g bw) of wheat crop. The sperm parameters (motility and viability) were significantly higher during initial growth stages of rice crop (tillering, panicle initation)and later growth stages of wheat crop (dough, pre-harvest). The diameter of mature ovarian follicles and seminiferous tubules were significantly higher during initial growth stages (tillering, panicle initiation and dough stage) of rice crop and later growth stages (dough, pre-harvest stage and lean period) of wheat crop. Thus, based on reproductive activity of T.indica, rodents control operations should be done before tillering stage of rice crop and during tillering/panicle initiation stage of wheat crop.
