    Analysis of secondary level school education in rural areas of Punjab

    The study was conducted to analyze the secondary level school education in rural areas of Punjab with respect to environment provided to the students, quality of school education and problems faced by teachers and students. It was limited to IX and X classes of 12 schools selected from three socio-cultural zones of the state. Four types of respondents were randomly drawn i.e. 12 principals, 60 teachers, 120 parents and 240 students from the selected schools. Interview schedule and questionnaire techniques were used to collect information regarding the selected parameters. Findings revealed that government schools having better infrastructure and instructional input viz. computer labs, edusat labs, scholarships produce qualitatively less outcome perhaps owing to the fact that most of these equipment remains lying idle/unused. The teachers are not adequately trained to handle teaching-learning resources. The most common problem faced by principals included disciplinary problems in schools and students faced the problem of discrimination based on caste/religion etc. Teachers get non-teaching assignments which they resent. The overall rural government secondary education was found in dismal state of health while, private schools are giving better results. The irony of the situation lies in the fact that teachers teaching in government schools do not want their own children to study in the same school due to poor quality of instructions being provided there.
