(Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, 2016) Abbott, Sanica; Goel, Veena
The study indicated that with the liberalisation and globalisation of the Indian economy, paved a way for the entry of the corporate sector in the agricultural sector to build up alliances with the farm sector as well as facilitated the domestic environment for the exports of fruits and vegetables. This study had been carried out for the FieldFresh Foods Pvt Limited and its partner farmers. The study revealed that the sample farmers’ total cultivated area under baby corn was 1207.95 acres and its total production stood 34636.25 quintals with an average yield of 28.67 quintals per acre. Season-wise analysis indicated that the average yield was the highest in season I followed by the season III and season II. Average yield of season II was statistically significantly different from season I and III. District wise comparison revealed that the sample farmers from Jalandhar district contributed 59.40 per cent of the cultivated area under baby corn and 59.38 per cent to its production. In contrast, growers from Ludhiana district contributed 30.42 per cent of the cultivated area and 30.63 per cent to its production. Average yields of baby corn stood marginally higher in Ludhiana district compared to Jalandhar district in all the three seasons but the difference was not significant statistically. Sample farmers disposed off baby corn by product i.e green fodder in the open market, dairies and on farm. Inputs costs such as fertilizers, seeds and labour costs constituted the major cost component for baby corn farmers. They earned reasonably higher returns from baby corn cultivation annually in comparison to traditional crops. Baby corn processing for value addition and prolong its shelf life was done in two ways- fresh and frozen. Shipment costs in fresh baby corn and freezing charges in frozen baby corn constituted the major cost components for each. Company has integrated the supply chain through backward linkages with its partner farmers for sourcing baby corn, BD Agro company for getting frozen baby corn processed and the service providers for logistics whereas major importers in the export markets for product disposal. Export market for baby corn has come to comprise of market segments of variants such as fresh and frozen. Fresh baby corn is sold in the domestic market via primary, secondary and tertiary wholesalers which constituted an essential link among the producers and consumers through retailers.
