STUDIES ON FLUID, ELECTROLYTE AND ACID-BASE IMBALANCE IN DIARRHEIC CALVES
(CSKHPKV, Palampur, 2016-01-23) SHARMA, SHRUTI; Kumar, Naresh
The present study was conducted on neonatal bovine calves (healthy and diarrheic) and various plasma hematological and biochemical parameters were compared in healthy and diarrheic calves. Hematological parameters (PCV, Hb and TEC) and plasma biochemical parameters (total protein, urea, creatinine, potassium) were elevated in diarrheic calves. Plasma glucose, sodium and chloride levels were decreased in calves suffering from diarrhea. . Three types of oral rehydration solutions (Lab made ORS, Commercial ORS, Home based ORS) were formulated for correction of the above mentioned parameters in diarrheic calves. The efficacy of these oral rehydration solutions in restoring fluid and electrolyte balance in these calves was evaluated. The treated calves were divided into three groups based upon the type of oral rehydration solution administered. A healthy control group and a diarrheic control group were also the part of the study. Administration of ORS resulted in correction of most of the hematological and biochemical parameters that were found to be disturbed in diarrheic calves. The degree of improvement varied with the type of ORS given. Lab made ORS administered to treatment group 1 had the highest efficacy while home based ORS provided to treatment group 3 had the least efficacy in restoring fluid and electrolyte parameters to normal.
