Identification of maintainers/restorers and determination of heterosis using cytoplasmic male sterile system in rice
(CSKHPKV, Palampur, 1999) Romesh, Kumar; Katoch, P.C.
Rice is the most important crop both in contribution to diet and in value of food production, and is a staple food for half of the world's population. Production and consumption wise, it is predominantly a crop of developing countries, accounting for 35-60 per cent of the calories intake. About 95 per cent of the total rice is grown in less developed nations, primarily in Asia. Although India ranks first in area under rice cultivation (42.5 m ha) but stands second in production (Anonymous, 1998). The total rice production has remained static for the last 10 years with an average productivity of 3.1 tonnes/ha, which is far below the world average.
