(DEPARTMENT OF ADVANCED THEOLOGICAL STUDIES SAM HIGGINBOTTOM UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE, TECHNOLOGY & SCIENCES PRAYAGRAJ, U.P, INDIA, 2019) LUKE, MATHEW; MATHEW, DR. SAM PEEDIKAYIL; CHERIAN, DR. M.T.
This thesis entitled ―Ecological significance of Pancamahabhutas in Vedic Tradition: Towards a Relevant Christian Eco-Theology” investigates the concept of Pancamahabhutas (elements) in Vedas and Bible for a critical-constructive examination, so as to become a possible religious resource for the revival of an integrated ecological understanding towards the relevant Christian eco-theology. A detailed study is undertaken to study the relevant Vedic and Bible texts from an ecological point of view. It examines the writings of Samhitas, Brahmanas, and Upanishad to understand Pancamahabhutas for the present relevance. The topic is important to consider on the account that, the ecological crisis should be seen as a human crisis and secondly, the role of religion, particularly the Vedic understanding of Pancamahabhutas as one of the most decisive and compatible ecological models for re-visioning the ecological balance to combat the environmental crisis. A study on biblical understanding of ecology to understand God‘s purpose of creation and human‘s responsibility towards it is undertaken. It also identifies the distinctive features of Christian eco-theology. The proposed thesis is based on library research in a descriptive-analytical way. This research involves historical analysis (through primary and secondary literature), which would deal with the history of religion, Scripture and faith and practices of ancient people. It also adopts a phenomenological approach to deal with particular religious phenomena as an important belief system. This study is an exegetical and textual analysis within ‗ecological hermeneutics‘ drawing insights for the enrichment of an eco-spirituality. This research is undertaken from the perspective of ecological liberation. The outcome of this study proposes that the understanding of bhutas in the Vedas provides a vision and helps as a religious resource for rethinking the relationship of human to nature. It also brings in us a positive attitude and respect towards nature. Religion and its teachings serve as a powerful resource in bringing change in values, beliefs, and attitudes in human lives. In the light of the spirituality of the bhutas three models are discussed as a paradigm shift in formulating a relevant eco-theology: One, from Anthropo-centric to triocentric. The Anthropo-centric view of creation proposes that humanity is the point of reference for everything. This understanding of Trinity gives us a new paradigm to reinterpret the God-human-nature relationship. Secondly, from Exploitation to Stewardship. Proper stewardship of the earth involves proper management of resources so that they will produce enough to care for the needs of all. Thirdly, from Domination and Self-centredness to Accountability and Holistic Spirituality. The relationship between creation and the creator, between creation and creation, will lead to develop a holistic spirituality than hierarchical superiority that causes destructive mindset . In conclusion this study reveals that the present ecological crisis can be dealt with effectively from a religious and spiritual point of view. Because religion has a great role in addressing the ecological crisis as people shape their lives following certain religious doctrines and teachings. Re-reading of scripture and religious texts from earth perspective are very important and play a significant role in shaping positive human attitudes towards ecological crisis. Religion thus needs to be re-examined in the light of the current environmental crisis. Salvation is not a just God-human relationship but it is restoring Creatorcreatures relationship. The Christian mission should focus not only on humanity rather it should widen to include the cosmic concerns as well. Ecological ministries should become an inherent part of the Church‘s ministry and give a lead as a model of ecological ministry. Jesus‘ life should inspire us to follow his footprints to live in harmony with the human and cosmic community, because ―all things came into being through him, and without him, not one thing came into being‖ (John 1:4). Thus this research is an exposition of the spiritual possibilities of humankind with its living environment mainly from an Indian perspective
