EXPLORATION OF BUD SPORT DIVERSITY IN THE APPLE (Malus × domestica Borkh.) ORCHARDS OF HIMACHAL PRADESH FOR GENETIC IMPROVEMENT
    (UHF,NAUNI, 2022-12) BODH, SUMAN; DOGRA, R K
ABSTRACT The present investigation was undertaken during 2019-22 to identify bud sports in apple. Field surveys of existing apple plantation in the districts of Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Kinnaur and Lahaul & Spiti in Himachal Pradesh were carried out during 2019-20.Based upon pre-selection criteria such as bearing habit, time of colour development and time of fruit maturation, screening of apple trees was done. Feedback information was also collectedfrom the orchardists/grower and the identified trees were marked for systematic evaluation studies. In all, 17 bud sports were identified. Fourteen of them were early colouring (HK, SK 1, SK 2, SN 1, SN 2, TM 1, TM 2, KM, JM 1, KP 1, KP 2, KP 3, ULS 1, ULS 2) in which colour development started 2-3 weeks earlier than in their mother trees. Two bud sports (RDM and JM 2) were late maturing as well as late in fruit peel colour development. One bud sport (KK) showed distinctive fruit peel colour. Apart from the distinguishing character for which the bud sports were identified, they also differed infruit shape, fruit size, fruit firmness, TSS and acidity. The distinct morpho-physicochemical variation observed in bud sports were validated by molecular marker studies. The three bud sports (HK, KP 3 and ULS 1) exhibited genetic variances among identified bud sports with their mother plants by using SSR markers. Theidentified bud sports have been vegetatively propagated for further studies in future.
