The purpose of this study is to estimate genetic and non-genetic factors affecting the birth weight of goats. Birth weight data on 487 newborn goat kids of two genetic groups viz., non-descript (237) and Boer graded (250) goats were analysed by least-squares analysis using LSMLMW PC-2 program. The study revealed highly significant (P< 0•01) effect of sire and sex of kid on birth weight. The regression of birth weight on dams body weight was found to be highly significant (P<0.01). The overall average birth weight was 2.17 ± 0.03 Kg. The male kids (2.26 ± 0.04 Kg) were heavier than the female kids (2.09 ± 0.04 Kg). The kids born during the northeast monsoon were heavier than the kids born in other seasons. The Boer graded kids (2.22 ± 0.06 Kg) were heavier than the non-descript kids (2.13 ± 0.06 Kg) but the difference was non-significant, indicating the uniform managemental practices followed in the farm. The significantly high heritability (0.425 ± 0.156) of birth weight in goat indicates the better scope for improvement of birth weight through individual selection.ArticleItem Open Access Genetic Diversity Analysis of Mecheri Sheep Using Microsatellite Markers(2009-07) Selvam, R.; Rahumathulla, P.S.; Sivaselvam, S.N.; Karthickeyan, S.M.K.; Rajendran, R.; TANUVASGenetic characterization of native breeds is the most significant step in safeguarding our germplasm. Thilak Pon; TANUVASGastro-intestinal nematodes are among the most important infections in livestock particularly sheep and goats. Conventional approaches including medication, pasture rotation, sanitation and improved nutrition are no more effective because of the anthelmintic resistance. A potential alternative measure to alleviate the problem is breeding for disease resistance with the goal of enhancing resistance to diseases and selection of livestock with natural or acquired resistance to disease.ArticleItem Open Access Genetics of Disease Resistance in Livestock - The Concepts and Applications(2014-06) Selvam, R.; Panneerselvam, S.; TANUVASArticleItem Open Access Microsatellite analysis of Kangayam cattle (Bos indicus) of Tamilnadu(Informatics Publishing Limited, 2009-10) Karthickeyan, S.M.K.; Sivaselvam, S.N.; Selvam, R.; Thangaraj, P.; TANUVASAssessment of genetic variability in Kangayam breed of cattle in Tamilnadu, South India was carried out using 25 bovine microsatellite markers. The mean number of alleles was 4.04 ± 0.09 with a range of 2 to 6 and the allele size ranged from 94 to 300 bp. The frequency distribution of alleles in the breed was from 0.0104 to 0.9167.ArticleItem Open Access Principle component analysis of genetic structure in Kilakarsal and Vembur sheep breeds by using single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) markers within TLR genes(2017) Selvam, R.; Murali, N.; Kumar, V. Ramesh Saravana; Ponnudurai, G.; TANUVAS; Thiruvenkadan, AKThe genetic structure among the Kilakarsal and Vembur sheep were studied by principal components analysis. A total of 25 SNP (each five SNP in TLR3, TLR5, TLR6, TLR9 and TLR10) were utilized for genotyping of Kilakarsal and Vembur sheep by using competitive allele specific PCR assay. The allele frequencies and allele sharing genetic distances (based on identical by state) among pairs of individuals within and across different sheep breeds was estimated by using PEAS program. Pair-wise inter individual allele sharing distance among both the sheep breeds were utilized to perform principal components analysis using SPSS. Among 25 SNPs analysed, 22 were found to be polymorphic in both Kilakarsal and Vembur sheep. The pairwise allele sharing distances indicated that certain individuals across populations were more related than individuals within populations. The top three principal components explained respectively 45.1, 20.2 and 11.9 % of the total variation and together explained 77.2 % of the variation in the dataset. The top eight principal components had eigen values greater than one and cumulatively explained 97.48 % of the total variation in the dataset. Principal components scattergam did not reveal the presence of cryptic genetic structure among the two sheep breeds under studyArticleItem Open Access Umblachery Breed of Cattle in South India: Genetic Assessment Through Microsatellite Markers(2007) Karthickeyan, S.M.K.; Sivaselvam, S.N.; Selvam, R.; Raja, T.V.; Rajendran, R.; Thangaraju, P.; TANUVASUmblachery cattle was assessed genetically using 25 microsatellite markers, as recommended by FAO. The number of alleles was ranging from 2 to 6 with a mean of 4.0 ± 0.11. The mean number of effective alleles were 2.91±0.09. The allele sizes were ranging from 94 to 300 bp with the frequency distribution of 0.0111 to 0.9375. The estimated heterozygosity value was high 0.6139 ± 0.02 and the PIC was 0.5625 ± 0.03 and the loci screened were polymorphic and overall mean FE value (-0.0487) suggested the excess of heterozygosity in the population. (Veelan ariviyal tamil iyakkam, Newdelhi, 2016) Selvam, R.; Murali, N.; Jawahar, Thilak Pon; Thiruvenkadan, A.K.; Saravanakumar, V.
