ArticleItem Open Access Developing a cumulative scale for measuring the performance of self-help groups in rural areas(Peer Reviewed Journal, 2015-08) Devaki, Kannappan; Mathialagan, Perumal; Sabarathnam, VE; TANUVASConsidering the growing significance of self-help groups for women empowerment, a scale was developed to measure the performance of self-help groups in rural areas by using Guttman scale method. The present study was conducted in five blocks of Kancheepuram district with a sample size of 100 women to measure their performance. For the purpose of this study, a variable was operationalized to measure the performance efficiency of SHG’s in rural areas in varying degrees of favourableness or unfavourableness. A total number of 34 indicators were finally selected and arranged randomly under eight dimensions in the scale consisting of 3-5 indicators in each dimensions. A two point response of agree and disagree were used as response categories. The co-efficient of reproducibility for each dimension was worked and overall co-efficient of reproducibility was found to be 0.991. Hence it can be accepted as very good scalogram. The relationship between responses of members of SHG’s and officials of SHG’s were found to have a positive and significant correlation.ThesisItem Open Access AN EXPLORATORY STUDY ON ANIMAL DISASTER MANAGEMENT (ADM) IN INDIA(TANUVAS, 2016) Rajkumar, Vimal N; Mathialagan, P; TANUVAS; Sabarathnam, VE; Gomathinayagam, S; Kumaravelu, NIndia is endowed with vast resources of livestock including poultry and fisheries. In due course, there is danger of extinction of this knowledge. It is of paramount importance to document these practices and to assess their validity. Hence an attempt was made to document the prevailing ITK’s among the 10 dairy cattle owners each from four districts viz., Tirunelveli, Namakkal, Vellore and Thiruppur districts and also comparing the present ITKs with the Modern Veterinary drugs for Anestrum. A sample of 40 farmers was interviewed through structured interview schedule to document the ITK’s used for controlling Anaestrum. The five ITKs for the anaestrum condition were subjected to validation test through the QuIK (Quantification Indigenous Technical Knowledge) method. All the ITKs were found to be effective against anaestrum. However, these were perceived to be comparatively less effective than the Modern Veterinary Drug (MVD) in numbers of animals cured and quickness of healing. The Indigenous Practices were perceived better than MVD in respect of their availability, lesser side effects, and lower cost.
