Antibiotic treatment of fertile eggs prior to their incubation is being widely followed for improving hatchability. Considering the importance of bacterial infections in reduced hatchability, the present study was aimed to isolate and characterize bacteria from dead-in-shell embryos in hatcheries and to assess their antibiotic sensitivity to enable selection of suitable antibiotics for egg dipping. Bacterial isolation attempts were made from 120 dead-in-shell embryos collected from four commercial hatcheries in Namakkal area of Tamilnadu at the time of their transfer to the hatcher. Forty seven isolates of bacteria of pathogenic importance including Pseudomonas aeruginosa (22 isolates), Escherichia coli (18) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (7) could be obtained. Antibiotic sensitivity testing of the isolates showed that chloramphenicol and gentamicin are the antibiotics of choice for egg dipping purposes to minimize infection of incubated eggs in hatcheries in this region.ThesisItem Open Access Immune response to combined foot and mouth disease, haemorrhagic septicaemia and black quarter vaccine and their respective monovalent vaccines in cattle(Department of Veterinary Epideminology and Preventive Medicine, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences,Mannuthy, 2001) Rajkumar, K; KAU; Saseendranath, MRImmune response to combined Foot and Mouth Disease, Haemorrhagic Septicaemia and Black Quarter vaccine and to their respective individual vaccine were studied. Group I animals were vaccinated with combined FMD, HS and BQ oil adjuvant vaccine. Group Il animals were vaccinated with FMD polyvalent oil adjuvant vaccine and combined HS, BQ gel vaccine. Group III animals were vaccinated with polyvalent FMD oil adjuvant vaccine, HS gel vaccine and BQ gel vaccme. Vaccinations were done in unvaccinated calves above four month of age. Booster vaccination were carried out after nine month after primary vaccination for oil adjuvant vaccine and six month after primary vaccination for gel vaccine in all group animals. Monthly assessment of antibody titres against 0, A, C and Asia-l antigens were made by liquid phase blocking ELISA and Pasteurella multocida and Clostridium chauvoei by Indirect ELISA. All the three groups maintained protective antibody titre for FMD virus type '0', 'A', 'C~, 'Asia-l', Pasteurella multocida and Clostridium chauvoei antibody titres throughout the study period. All the three groups did not show any significant variation in antibody titres against FMDV type, '0', 'A', 'C' and 'Asia-L' and Pasteurella multocida and Clostridium chauvoei though they are well above protective titres. From this observation it is concluded that 1. All the three schedule of vaccination provides sufficient protective titre for FMDV type, '0', 'A', 'C' and 'Asia- l' and Pasteurella multo cid a and Clostridium chauvoei though they are well above protective titres. 2. Combined vaccine performance is equally good as that of individual vaccine. 3. Combined vaccine reduces labour cost for injection, number of visit and stress to the animals to a very great extent. There fore combined vaccine may be preferred when compared to individual vaccine.ArticleItem Open Access Proximate Composition and Meat Quality of Three Indian Native Chicken Breeds(2020) Tensingh Gnanaraj, P; Shanmuga Sundaram, A; Rajkumar, K; Narendra Babu, R; TANUVASABSTRACT Background: The present study was conducted at Livestock farm complex, TANUVAS, Chennai (India) with the objective of comparing the proximate composition and meat characters of three desi chicken breeds viz., Kadaknath, Nicobari Black and Naked Neck chicken. Methods: For this purpose, 60 adult birds (20 each) were maintained on littered floor in separate pens under optimal management conditions. The birds were fed with ad libitum balanced broiler ration and slaughtered after 8 weeks by randomly selecting 6 birds from each breed. Result: Laboratory analysis revealed that there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the proximate composition of meats among the three native chicken breeds. The total ash content and calcium level was found to be higher in Nicobari Black chicken meat than other breeds and Naked Neck chicken showed the highest value of unsaturated fatty acid. There was significant difference (p<0.01) in the physical characters like pH, Water Holding Capacity (WHC), Shear Force Value (SFV), Extract Release Volume (ERV), Thiobarbituric Acid (TBA), Tyrosine Value (TV) texture profile analysis and hunter colour value among the three native breeds. These factors will help us to choose the right native desi breed for development of designer and value added meat products.ArticleItem Open Access Subcutaneous emphysema in a domesticated fantail pigeon caused by Columbicola columbae infestation: A case report(2018) Shanmuga Sundaram, A; Rajkumar, K; Arunkumar, S; Tensingh Gnanaraj, P; TANUVASA rare case of subcutaneous emphysema in fantail pigeon flock due to itching leading to continuous scratching with inanimate objects caused by lice infestation was reported in Livestock Farm Complex (TANUVAS), Chennai, Tamil Nadu in the month of January 2018. Examination of feathers revealed the presence of lice and these lice were collected and identified as Columbicola columbae, a slender biting type louse. Post-surgical intervention with injectable antibiotic along with B complex treatment resulted in uneventful recovery within 7 days.
