Tellicherry goats are one among the milch breeds of goats of Kerala and also reared in different parts of Tamil Nadu. They are medium sized animals and the home tract of this breed is a Calicut, Cunnannore and Malapuram district of Kerala. The coat colour of Tellicherry goats varies widely from completely white to completely black. The ears are medium sized, directed outward and downward. The average lactation milk yield is 43.78 kg for an average lactation length of 143.5 days. They are prolific breed of goats and the average single and multiple birth percentages pooled over parities were 50.5 and 49.5 % respectively (Acharya, 1982). Birth weight is the first observed trait in life of an animal on which growth, production and reproduction traits are dependent. The present investigation was carried out to study the various non-genetic factors affecting birth weight of Tellicherry kids born under organized farm condition.ArticleItem Open Access Feeding Behaviour of Crossbred Large White Yorkshire Pigs Under Different Feeding Regimes(2010) Chinnamani, K.; Sivakumar, T.; Gnanaraj, P. Tensingh; Murugan, M.; TANUVASA trial was conducted to document the feeding behaviour of crossbred Large White Yorkshire pigs under different feeding regimes. A total of 32 weaned crossbred (75 per cent) Large White Yorkshire piglets were selected at random comprising of eight piglets in each group and they were subjected to four different feeding treatments viz., 100 per cent concentrate (T1), 100 per cent swill (T2), 75 per cent swill plus 25 per cent concentrate (T3), 50 per cent swill plus 50 per cent concentrate feeding (T4).ArticleItem Open Access Genetic and non-genetic factors affecting body weight in Tellicherry goats(South African Society for Animal Science, 2009) Thiruvenkadan, A.K.; Murugan, M.; Karunanithi, K.; Muralidharan, J.; Chinnamani, K.; TANUVASData on 566 Tellicherry goats, recorded between 1988 and 2007 were used to study the effect of nongenetic factors on body weight and daily gain from birth to 12 months of age. The least-squares means for body weight at birth and at 12 months of age were 2.17 ± 0.03 and 18.78 ± 0.44 kg, respectively. The preand post-weaning average daily weight gains were 72.41 ± 1.68 and 37.46 ± 1.49 g, respectively, and the associated growth efficiencies were 3.11 ± 0.08 and 1.34 ± 0.05, respectively. Significant differences associated with the year of kidding were observed in body weight, weight gain and efficiency in weight gain at different stages of growth. Growth rate of kids born between December and February was relatively slower than those born in other months and this can result from seasonal changes and suggests that it is necessary to plan the kidding season rationally by controlling the oestrus and mating time. The kids born as twin had lower birth weight and slower early growth rate than those born as single but had a higher postweaning growth rate. The heritabilities of different traits were moderate to high, except for birth weight, which was of low heritability. The phenotypic and genetic correlations among the different body weights were positive and low to high in magnitude.ThesisItem Open Access Growth Performance and Carcass Characteristics of Crossbred Large White Yorkshire Pigs Under Different Feeding Regimes(TANUVAS, 2003) Chinnamani, K.; TANUVAS; Arunachalam, S.; Sivakumar, T.; Venkataramanujam, V.OtherItem Open Access Growth Performance and Relative Cost Economics of Salem Black Kids Reared Under Different Systems of Management(TANUVAS, Chennai, 2011-12) Chinnamani, K.; Arulnathan, N.; Bandeswaran, C.; Ravi, P.ArticleItem Open Access Growth Performance Of Crossbred Large White Yorkshire Pigs Under Different Feeding Regimes(2008) Chinnamani, K.; Sivakumar, T.; Gnanaraj, P. On clinical examination of the ram revealed dullness, dehydration, scanty faeces and slight distension of the abdomen at paralumbar fossa. After three days of treatment the ram was died. Post mortem examination of the ram revealed presence of six numbers of hair balls in the abomasal contents. Trichobezoar occurred as a result of mange infestation and or/ vice due to boredom as a result of confinement.ArticleItem Open Access OCCURRENCE OF PESTI DES PETITIS RUMINANTS (PPR) IN SHEEP AND GOAT FARM(2013-06) Bharathy, N; Senthamil Pandian, C; Chinnamani, K.; Bandeswaran, C; Murali, N; Muralidharan, J; Akila, N; TANUVASPesti des Petitis Ruminants is a highly contagious disease of goats caused by virus belonging to moribilivirus genus of family “Paramyxoviridae”. Pesti des Petitis Ruminants is an acute or sub acute viral disease of goats and sheep and literarily means “disastrous diseases of small ruminants” in French. Usually goats are more severely affected than sheep. In India, Pesti des Petitis Ruminants was first reported in 1987 from Arasur village in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu, South India (Shalia et al., 1989). Since its first reported occurrence in 1987, Pesti des Petitis Ruminants was thought to be restricted to southern India upto 1993, after which the epidemics of Pesti des Petitis Ruminants devastated large number of small Ruminants from northern India by Nanda (1996). Since then Pesti des Petitis Ruminants has been reported regularly from different parts of the country. The disease is considered as an endemic disease causing great loss to small ruminants of the country. Now the disease has spread all over India. There is also a common confusion of Pesti des Petitis Ruminants with pneumonic diseases of small ruminants which delays its recognition and preventive measures.ArticleItem Open Access Studies on Carcass Traits of Salem Black Goats Under Intensive and Semi-Intensive Systems of Rearing(2016-10) Chinnamani, K.; Kumar, V. Ramesh Saravana; Sureshkumar, S.; Muralidharan, J.; Thiruvenkadan, A.K.; Vasanthakumar, P.; TANUVASGoat is a very important component in dry land farming system. As per the 19th livestock census, the total goat population of India is 135.17 million. Goats are among the main meat producing animals in India, and chevon is one the choicest meat with huge domestic demand. Salem Black goat is one among the three recognized goat breeds in Tamil Nadu.ArticleItem Open Access Surgical Management of Umbilical Hernia in Large White Yorkshire Piglet Under General Anaesthesia(Indian Veterinary Association, 2018-05) Vigneshwaran, S.; Ramesh, V.; Sivakumar, K.; Chinnamani, K.; TANUVASA three month old male Large White Yorkshire piglet weighing about 15 kg found with progressive swelling on the ventral part of abdomen near umbilical region with poor feed intake and reduced growth rate. On clinical examination the swelling was reducible and non – painful. Hernial ring was palpable after reduction of hernial contents. Surgical correction of hernia was done as per standard surgical procedure. Absence of nociception re ex and no movement of animal with adequate relaxation of muscles revealed that the anaesthetic protocol was suitable for the surgical procedure followed. It was concluded that xylazine at the dose rate of 1mg / kg body weight and ketamine at the dose rate of 5 mg/kg body weight in piglets found suitable anaesthetic protocol and hernial repair during early age had more successive rate in pigs.ArticleItem Open Access ஆடு வளர்ப்பில் பெட்டை மற்றும் கிடாக்களின் இனவிருத்தித் திறனைப் பாதிக்கும் காரணிகள்(TANUVAS, 2012-06) Karunanidhi, K.; Arulnathan, N.; Chinnamani, K.; TANUVAS
