ArticleItem Open Access EFFECT OF FEEDING LANNEA COROMANDELICA LEAVES ON THE REPRODUCTION OF GOATS(Indian Society for Sheep and Goat Production and Utilization, 2006-04) Chellapandian, M.; Balachandran, S.; TANUVASLannea coromandelica- a non leguminous deciduous tree grown throughout the Indian Peninsula is a high fodder yielding and drought resistant. The proximate composition and nutritive value of leaves are comparable to most of the non-legume tree leaves, capable of meeting the protein and energy requirement when fed as a sole source of feed (Chellapandian et al., 2005). The leaves are low in nitrate, tannins and capable of supporting normal growth in kids without any change in rumen or blood picture (Chellapandian et al., 2004). However, information on the effect of feeding Lannea coromandelica leaves on reproductive performance of does or bucks is scanty. The present study was therefore, undertaken to observe the effect of feeding Lannea coromandelica leaves on the reproductive and semen quality traits of Tellicherry goats.ArticleItem Open Access EFFECT OF NON-GENETIC FACTORS ON BIRTH WEIGHT AND BODY MEASUREMENTS OF VEMBUR LAMBS(Indian Society for Sheep and Goat Production and Utilization, 2007-04) Ravikumar, T.; Thanaseelaan, V.; Piramanayagam, S.; Balachandran, S.; TANUVASVembur Sheep is a hairy mutton breed of Tamil Nadu, distributed in Vembur, Melakaranthai, Keezhakarandhai, Nagalapuram, Kavundanpatty, Achangulam and some other villages of Pudur and Vilathikulam panchayat union areas of Thoothukudi district. Jonhson; TANUVASAnalysis of blood samples of 100 Kanni goats from the breeding tract areas of three districts in Tamil Nadu, India exhibited haemoglobin 8.45±0.03 g/dl, packed cell volume 26.15±0.18%, total erythrocyte count 7.59±0.03 millions/cmm, white blood cell count 7104.32±53.76 /cmm, neutrophils 33.90±0.26%, lymphocytes 64.60±0.27% and eosinophils 1.53±0.14%. Serum values were total protein (g/dl), albumin (g/dl)), globulin (g/dl), blood glucose (mg/dl), cholesterol (mg/dl), calcium (mg/dl) and phosphorus (mg/dl) were 6.70±0.02, 3.68±0.01, 3.04±0.03, 47.00±0.53, 59.50±1.30, 7.60±0.05 and 3.58± 0.02, respectively. Significant variation in the white blood cell count was noticed between Kanni goats of less than and more than one year groups. In male goats, significant variation was reported in the calcium content between less than and more than one-year-old animals. Male animals had higher values of haemoglobin, PCV, RBC, WBC counts, total protein and albumin than female goats.ArticleItem Open Access PERFORMANCE OF INDIGENOUS GOAT (PALLAI ADU) UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS(TANUVAS, 2009-09) Ravimurugan, T.; Devendran, P.; Cauveri, D.; Balachandran, S.; TANUVASSurvey conducted in the breeding tracts of Pallai Adu goats revealed that the animals were distributed in the Karungulam and Ottapidaram blocks of Thoothukudi and Palayamkottai block of Tirunelveli districts in Tamil Nadu.
