Abstract
In India having 4% of world‘s fresh water, out of which 80-90% is used in agriculture. India is one of the country in fast moving towards a crisis of ground water. Agriculture is the primary cause of over-exploitation of ground water in India. Ground water overuse or overexploitation is defined as a situation in which, over a period of time, average extraction rate from aquifers is greater than the average recharge rate. In states were proving electric connections either free or charged at a subsidized rate. This results in the excessive extraction of groundwater cause overexploitation. This is serious problem in current situation this subsidized charges are burden to Government and groundwater depletion is threat to environment. Almost 22% of groundwater (assessed units) in the country has either dried up or is in the critical‘ and over-exploited‘ categories in 2017.
