Abstract
The present investigation entitled, “Molecular characterization of pomegranate cv. Bhagwa and its closely related genotypes” was carried out during year 2012 and 2013. The objective of present investigation was to study and detect similarity or diversity among sixteen closely related genotypes of Bhagwa cultivar of pomegranate at morphological, biochemical and molecular levels. For this study, sixteen closely related genotypes of Bhagwa cultivar of pomogranate were collected from various locations in Maharashtra State i. e. Solapur, Sangli, Satara, Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik district and three pomegranate varieties, namely. Selection-4, Phule Arakta and Mridula were collected from germplasm collection block of AICRP on Arid Zone Fruits, MPKV, Rahuri. All 19 genotypes were studied for morphological and biochemical characters during 2012 and 2013. All the 19 genotypes were subjected to molecular characterization using SSR and ISSR markers. The experimental results showed that there is some variation in the sixteen closely related genotypes of Bhagwa cultivar of pomegranate for morphological, biochemical and molecular traits. For tree characters, all genotypes showed spreading nature of growth with evergreen foliage, greenish brown suckers, new flush with brown foliage and light brown shoots with profused spinyness.
