Adequate supply of nutrients to plant roots is not merely a function of total amount of a particular nutrient in the soil, but it depends on the rate of replenishment of nutrient from the soil solution also. Eventhough the nutrients are dissolved in soil solution, the nutrients like Fe is not very mobile because of its entrapment in the water filled fraction of the tortuous pore system of the soil. In order to study the kinetics and uptake efficiency of Fe, many mathematical models are being used to have a better understanding of fundamental principles involved in the process of nutrient uptake by plant roots growing in soil. These models are based on ion transport from soil to roots by means of mass flow or diffusion as well as on nutrient uptake kinetics, mostly following Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Mechanistic models are useful tools for evaluating the significance ofen_US
