The environmental factors play pivotal role for sustainable agricultural development. Among the diverse ecological environmental factors , deficit rainfall is of special significance in Indian agricultural economy. Drought, a natural calamity , occurred in India causing huge economic loss in addition to poverty, malnutrition and social problems. Thus, it is of the gravest concern for policy makers for attaining stability in agriculture . Akin at the national scene, Gujarat state is also a host of many drought year sowing to 79.00 per cent of land depending on vagaries of monsoon, The encountering of unprecedented droughts are successive three years from 1985-88 and also during 1991-92 created a crisis situation in Gujarat The drought is labelled as 'creeping disaster provides sufficient time for preparation to counter its impact, noting that, drought can be managed to lessen its ill effect on farming population. So, it is an interesting research area to explore the possibilities of management. Thus, tribal farmers evolve response mechanisms for exploiting all viable means to achieve economic security. But, studies on adaptation patterns of farmers to drought have been undertaken overseas and are less comprehensive as well as lack of multivariate approaches. Additionally, the assessment of appropriateness and effectiveness in implementation of government sponsored drought mitigating programmes provide useful indicators for future improvements Also, in view of multiple factors involved in the management of drought induced crisis, a research involving critical analysis of all the factors of crisis management by tribal farmers was not undertaken in the past studies. Raraegowda (1991) have emphasized the need for the scientific study of the problem of measuring crisis management by the tribal farmers, since, it can yield importĀ£int implications for the improvement of the performance in a given situation. Keeping this in view, the investigation entitled, "A Study On Crisis Management And Adaptation Patterns By The Tribal Farmers To Drought Situation" in Panchmahals District of Gujarat State was undertaken.en_US
