Abstract
DGAT1 gene is a key enzyme in triacylglycerol synthesis in the mammary
gland, and it has emerged as a strong candidate for the variation in milk fat percentage
and milk yield. DGAT1 locus has exhibited polymorphisms at several sites in cattle
among which lysine-232/alanine (K232A) has found major effects on milk yield and
milk fat percentage. Recent studies showed fixed ‘K’ allele at K232A DGAT1 gene in
Bos indicus and Bubalus bubalis. Exploration in buffalo revealed 19 SNPs, all in
intronic regions, in Bubalus bubalis which might have association with milk
production traits.
