Abstract
Effect of elicitors (Chitosan and Arachidonic Acid) on the induction of resistance against Alternaria blight in Brassica juncea L. was studied. Enzymes of defense system viz. Peroxidase (PO) Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and Phenylalanine Ammonia Lyase (PAL) and Phenolics (Total phenols, o-dihydroxyphenols and flavanols) were analyzed in germinating seeds and leaves of Brassica juncea L. (var. RLM 619) with elicitor treatment and Alternaria brassicae inoculation. In germination studies, Chitosan and AA at 0.5ppm and 1ppm proved to be good elicitors in eliciting enzyme and phenolics in leaves whereas a little elicitation was observed in plumule and radicle of germinating seeds. In pot house studies, elicitors were applied as foliar spray. 1 and 5 ppm concentrations of chitosan and 10 and 50ppm of AA were sprayed on Brassica juncea L. leaves. Chitosan (5ppm) and AA (10ppm) showed better effect in eliciting defense enzymes and phenolics in the leaves of Brassica juncea L. Increase in defense enzyme coincided with the increase in phenolic content indicating that defense enzyme like PO and PAL are involved in synthesis of phenols, which are involved in lignin-biosynthesis. The studies revealed that foliar spray of chitosan and AA was found to be a better treatment to immunize Brassica juncea L. plants than seed soaking/dressing method.
