| dc.description.abstract | In the present study, incidence, diagnosis and treatment of various eye affections of the dogs were studied. It was observed that eye affections were more common in old age dogs. In a total number of 67 eye affections, conjunctivitis and cataract were the most prevalent. The incidence of conjunctivitis and cataract was more in male dogs. All cases of conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis in the present study were bilateral and associated with dermatitis and otitis in most of the cases. In ulcerative keratitis, supplementation of vitamin A helped in early recovery. Chronic epiphora which was due to obstruction of nasolacrimal system was observed mostly in the Spitz breed of dogs. Glaucoma was observed only in female dogs with mean age of onset being 7.5 ± 0.9 years. The intraocular pressure (10P) in glaucoma eyes recorded was higher ( > 35 mmHg) as compared to the 10P of normal healthy eye (mean 27.95 mmHg). Glaucoma was also observed secondary to cataract and the mean age of onset of cataract in the present study was 9.7 ± 0.9 years. Microbiological evaluation revealed Staphylococcus aureus from the conjunctiva in most of the eyes and Streptococcus spp. in other few eyes. These bacterial isolates were sensitive to gentamicin and chloramphenicol in all cases with varying sensitivity to norfloxacin, enrofloxacin, tetracycline, ampicillin and cloxacillin. Haematological values were within normal range in almost all the cases. Other eye affections observed were heterochromia iridis, cystic swelling of third eyelid, hyperplasia of nictitans gland, squamous cell carcinoma of eyelid, persistent pupillary membrane, retinal detachment and panophthalmitis. | |
