The objectives of the study were to establish a reference database for the Doppler values of major blood vessels in cattle and buffalo and to evaluate their efficacy in disease diagnosis. A total of 458 (230 healthy and 228 diseased) blood vessels {common carotid artery (CCA), external jugular vein (EJV), cranial epigastric vein (CEV), caudal vena cava (CdVC), portal vein (PV) and the cranial tibial vein (CTV)} were scanned for Doppler ultrasonography. The B-mode and Doppler database for these blood vessels was established in healthy cattle and buffalo. Significant species difference existed among the Doppler parameters of various blood vessels. The blood flow velocities (CCA and CEV) were higher in cattle whereas the vessel diameter (CCA, CEV, CdVC and PV) and the depth of the vessel (CCA, EJV, CEV and CdVC) were higher in buffalo. Pregnancy reduced the vessel diameter and the end diastole velocity of CTV in healthy buffaloes. The B-mode and Doppler study of EJV was useful in RDH and pericarditis, irrespective of species. The RDH and pericarditis significantly reduced the blood flow velocities of EJV with higher magnitude in pericarditis. The pulsality and resistive indices of EJV were significantly increased in pericarditis but not in RDH. The B-mode and Doppler study of CdVC and PV was found useful in pericarditis, irrespective of species, with an increase in the diameter of CdVC and a reduction in the velocities of CdVC and PV. Traumatic reticulitis and RDH altered the Doppler parameters of CEV in cattle. Hind limb varicosity significantly increased the velocities and the diameter of CTV in gravid buffaloes. Doppler ultrasonography of CdVC and EJV is recommended as a part of diagnostic protocol in pericarditis; EJV and CEV in RDH and CEV in traumatic reticulitis affected bovine.en_US
