SPORTS IN PUNJAB AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY: A CASE STUDY

Abstract
PunjabAgriculturalUniversity, a name to reckon with, has been a fore-runner in the genre of sports. The research study emphasizes and categorizes the salient achievements of its sports persons from the time afar to the present era. The study is purely based on the records preserved by the Directorate Student’s Welfare. It is an objective reflection of the facilities, infrastructure and the tutelage which has borne these accomplishments. The research project highlights that PAU has groomed sports progenies like Padamshri Olympian Charanjit Singh, Padamshri Olympian Prithipal Singh and Olympian Ramandeep Singh Grewal. Under PAU’s patronizing banner, Rajvinder Singh represented India in the first World Cup hockey tournament in 1971; Piara Singh represented Indian handball squad in International Handball Tournament in 1982; Ramandeep Singh Brar represented India in Commonwealth Handball Championship in 1994. PAU teams and individuals have registered to their name noteworthy laurels by bagging 23 percent top positions , 40 percent runners-up positions and 28 percent second runners-up positions in various International and National tournaments or championships. The research project analyses the sports field through varied games. A total of 24 men and 27 women PAU athletic professionals clinched gold medals in 11 Inter-Agricultural Universities Sports and Games Meets during the period 1999-2009. Sports have emerged as a brand in itself, under the auspices of PunjabAgriculturalUniversity. Its state-of- the- art infrastructure, its internationally acclaimed coaches and its ever enthusiastic sports persons have truly taken sports to a whole new level
