Abstract
Salmonella Gallinarum (SG) is a non-motile, host adapted avian pathogen
belonging to Salmonella serogroup D and is responsible for Fowl Typhoid (FT)
which is an acute septicaemic disease characterized by anaemia, leucocytosis and
haemorrhages in adult chickens. Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) another member of
Salmonella serogroup D is frequently isolated from poultry and possesses a
significant public health importance. Salmonella Pullorum (SP) is yet another group
D serotype responsible for Pullorum Disease (PD) in chicks but can infect adult
chickens and cause disease similar to FT. Hence, differentiation between the two
strains is critical from both epidemiological and preventive aspects. Also, all the
above three i.e. Salmonella Gallinarum, Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella
Pullorum are very similar in their antigenic structure
