Abstract
Bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) is an important infectious agent, belonging to the genus Varicellovirus (subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae) of the Herpesviridae family, which causes heavy losses to the dairy sector by affecting both milk production and health of animals. Because of the transmission of the virus through semen, the infection is of great concern for the dairy animals, especially when artificial insemination (AI) is commonly practiced. BHV-1 is associated with several clinical manifestations including rhinotracheitis, vulvovaginitis, balanoposthitis, conjunctivitis and generalized systemic infections. During the last few decades, it has been reported from several parts of world, including India
