The present study attempts to analyse the consumption pattern of the households in rural and urban areas of North Eastern Karnataka (NEK) region. The study is based on the primary data obtained through a survey of 180 respondents belongs to Gulbarga and Raichur districts of NEK region. In order to get a clear picture of consumption pattern of HVAC, the dietary assessment of children in different age groups up to adolescence were analysed. Log Log Inverse (LLI) form of Engel’s equation was used to compute income elasticity, while multiple regression analysis was fitted to determine the factors influencing the consumption expenditure on HVAC. The findings revealed a significant difference in consumption expenditure across rural and urban area and also across different income levels. The percentage share of HVAC was higher in rural area in comparison with urban areas. The dietary analysis among children revealed that the cereals consumption was more than RDA for all the age group children except adolescent boys while the intake of HVAC was less than RDA. The income elasticity was found to be higher in rural areas in comparison with urban area and also vary across income groups. The magnitude of elasticity was higher for lower income group and these tend to decrease as income increases. The monthly expenditure on HVAC was influenced by family income, family size and location. The study highlighted the influence of caste on the consumption expenditure on non-vegetarian foods. The educated women included diverse vegetables in the daily diet and thereby improved the nutritional status of households. The study proposed the expansion of existing rural markets to absorb HVAC produced and made available to the needy consumers at an affordable price to drive away the malnutrition in rural areas.en_US
