Cardamon is one of the major spices crop of India. There are mainly two species grown in India, one is Elettaris cardamomum, maton (small cardamon) and other Amomum subulatum, Roxburgh, which is also commonly known as large cardamon. This is largely grown in Sikkim state, Darjeeling district of West Bengal and little in North Eastern state. Large cardamon is the main cash crop of Sikkim and grown extensively but there was an acute need of new technology. After the establishment of Cardamom Board in the state in the year 1979, the Board has successfully introduced a new technology in this line and such efforts are diverted in this field by various schemes, but the ageold practice is still prevelent.en_US
