Phenolic and detoxification mechanism was studied in shoots and roots of infected rice seedlings by Fusariummoniliforme (causes foot rot or bakanae in rice) and improvements were observed by applying ABA and SA individually and in combined form. Study was performed in two cultivars Punjab Mehak 1 as tolerant and Pusa1121 as susceptible to disease. Under pathogen infection, root growth, levels of lignin, phenolics and flavonoids, activities of cell wall peroxidases/polyphenol oxidases, redox state of glutathione, activities of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase were found higher and protein carbonyls were found lower in Pb. Mehak 1 than Pusa1121. This difference was more pronounced in roots than shoots. In Pusa 1121, these deficient features were improved by applications of ABA and SA. Both hormones produced almost similar effects only difference was seen that ABA improved root growth, redox state of glutathione, soluble-peroxidase/solublepolyphenol oxidase more than SA while SA improved cell wall-peroxidase/cell wallpolyphenol oxidase and lignin more than ABA. Protein carbonyl level under infection was related to disease susceptibility but malondialdehyde (MDA) level was not related to susceptibility.en_US
