The livestock sector is an important sub-sector of Punjab agriculture providing regular income and employment to farmers. For high productivity and profitability from livestock sector, green fodder plays an important role. Among the all fodder crops, berseem crop is main rabi season fodder crop and is found to be highly nutritious. The present study was conducted in Ludhiana and Gurdaspur districts of Punjab during 2018-19; Data was collected from 80 fodder growers regarding the use of quality berseem seed, various sources of seed, adoption gaps in production practices of berseem fodder; 20 seed producers to analyse the economics of berseem seed production and 10 market intermediaries for determining the market price spread through main prevalent market channels in Punjab. The result of the study revealed that the main sources of berseem seed was seed dealer, self-retained, fellow farmers, relatives and institutional sources with about 37, 34, 29, 9 and 6 per cent shares respectively. The main adoption gaps found in fodder production were variety use, seed rate, seed treatment, fertilizers used, extent of certified and TL seed use and SRR followed by the selected respondents. Regarding the cost and returns, total costs found under berseem seed production were Rs. 22247/- and gross returns were Rs. 99870/- with overall profit noted of Rs. 77623/- per acre which was the highest among main competing wheat crops. The marketing channel-I (Seed producer-seed user) emerged out to be the most efficient marketing channel for berseem seed marketing. High labour cost was the main problem faced by the fodder growers. Price variability emerged out to be the major problem faced by the seed growers during marketing of berseem seed.en_US
