Thunnus tonggol, a coastal tuna popularly called long tail tuna forms an important fishery in Thoothukkudi coastal waters from June to September and are caught in gill nets with the mesh size ranging from 6.0 to 13.5 cm. The fishery is constituted by the length group 300mm to 575 mm The present study deals with the optimization of mesh size to capture the mature fishers of commercial value. The gill net mesh size of 10.64 cm. is optimum for exploiting the T. tanggol of size 426 - 575 mm from Thoothukudi waters.en_US
