dc.description.abstractThe present investigation was carried out in Ludhiana city to study the income generating potential of macrame. An interview schedule was prepared for the purpose of collecting data from 120 purposively selected respondents belonging to 20-30 years of age group and from upper middle class. The results of investigation revealed that majority of the respondents were graduate, housewives; belonged to nuclear families and had a monthly income of families above Rs 50,000/-. About 52.5 per cent respondents possessed macrame articles. Furthermore, 90 percent respondents were aware of knots and only 33.33 per cent practice macrame at home. The respondents preferred to have wrist band, bag, pot-holder, wall hanging, belt, lampshade, skirt, pair of earrings, necklace and door chime as the ten most preferred innovative articles. Square knot, square knot crossover, half knot, half-hitch knot and josephine knot were the most preferred knots. The most preferred yarns for macrame were nylon, rayon and jute cords. The popular colours included brown, maroon, white, off white, red and green. Preferences of the respondents regarding prepared articles showed that, a nylon cord purse made in red colour and with square knot was given first preference on the basis of suitability of yarn, design, colour and utility. Another article, a brown coloured pot-holder with half knot and square knot was preferred on the basis of overall impact. The respondents found the concept of macrame appealing and unique. The majority of the respondents found quoted price low, 13.63 to 150 percent profit can be earned by making innovative articles using macrame technique.en_US
