Abstract
The present work was undertaken to provide rapid diagnosis of poultry diseases by cytology and to compare it with histopathology. Cytology was found to be very effective tool in the diagnosis of neoplastic and non neoplastic diseases/conditions of poultry as 74.19 per cent cases were confirmed on cytology. There was an excellent correlation (92.0%) between cytology and histopathology in neoplastic diseases viz. Marek's disease, lymphoid leucosis and adenocarcinoma of ovary. The correlation of cytology with histopathology in non-neoplastic specific diseases (inclusion body hepatitis, hydropericardium syndrome, salmonellosis, aspergillosis, coccidiosis and histomoniasis) was also very good (88.23%). Similarly, cytology was found to be effective in diagnosis of miscellaneous specific conditions viz. gout and fatty liver. However, non-specific inflammatory conditions gave poor diagnosis on cytology. A comparison of different staining techniques (H&E, Papanicolaou, May-Grunwald Giemsa and Wright) revealed H&E as reasonably good in elaborating cytological response in general, whereas Papanicolaou was excellent in neoplastic diseases. Overall cytology was found to be quite sensitive, specific and rapid tool in diagnosis of diseases/conditions of poultry
