Brinjal is an important solanaceous vegetable crop. Due to wide variability, it holds potential for fiirther improvement. The present investigation on brinjal comprised of a half-diallel set of 8 parents, 28 F1 hybrids and 2 hybrid check varieties GBH-1 and GBH-2. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with 3 replications at Main Vegetable Research Station, Gujarat Agricultural University, Anand Campus, Anand, during kharif-rabi 2001-2002. Heterosis, combining ability and components of genetic variance and graphical analysis were studied for 14 characters, viz. days to first picking, plant height, plant spread, primary branches per plant, fruit length, fruit girth, fruit weight, fruits per plant, fruit yield per plant, 100 seed weight, fruit volume, dry matter, total soluble sugars and total phenols. The analysis of variance indicated significant differences among genotypes for all the characters. Several hybrids exhibited heterobeltiosis and economic heterosis for fruit yield and other characters. The hybrids worth for commercial exploitation of heterosis on the basis of both per se performance and estimates of heterosis were AB-00-6 x AB-01-4, PLR-1 x SKN-GR-1 and PLR-1 X Green Round. The general and specific combining ability variances were highly significant for all the traits. The sea and gca variances suggested predominant role of non-additive gene effects for the inheritance of all the traits except fruits per plant. The estimates of general combining ability effects revealed that parents AB-00-6 and PLR-1 appeared to be good general combiners for fruit yield per plant and some of the other yield attributes and quality parameters. A close relationship was found between per se performance and gca effects of parents. The estimates of specific combining ability effects indicated that cross combinations AB-00-6 x AB-01-4, PLR-1 x SKN-GR-1 and PLR-1 x Green Round were significant for fruit yield and its major components as well as quality characters. There was some degree of correspondence between per se performance and sea effects of hybrids as well as sea effects and heterobeltiosis for most of the traits. Assumptions basic to diallel were only fulfilled for the characters plant height and fruits per plant. The component and graphical analysis also revealed the importance of both additive and non-additive genetic variances for the inheritance of most of the traits. Degree of dominance indicated over-dominance for plant height while almost complete dominance was observed for fruits per plant. Positive and negative alleles were distributed asymmetrically and higher frequency of dominant genes were found in the parents for plant height and fruits per plant. The heritability estimates were observed to be high for fruits per plant and moderate for plant height. The graphical analysis indicated complementary type of gene interaction for the control of few traits. The findings have been discussed in the light of their implications in brinjal breeding programme. Present findings indicated that breeding approaches like biparental mating followed by recurrent selection, diallel selective mating etc., in addition to conventional methods are suggested for the improvement of these traits.en_US
