Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Performance of Salix hybrid clones under nursery conditions in Punjab” was carried out in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, during 2018-2019. Stem cuttings of one year old plants of twenty five Salix hybrid clones were planted out under nursery conditions using randomized complete block design at a spacing of 30 cm x 30 cm distance and were evaluated for growth and biomass and wood parameters. On the basis of mean performance, clone UHFS 333 and UHFS 121 were found outstanding for growth, biomass and wood traits in comparison to check clone (UHFS 06). Highest genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variance values was recorded for shoot dry weight and lowest in stem straightness. High heritability and high genetic gain was found for plant height, total fresh weight and total dry weight. Highly significant and positive genotypic and phenotypic correlation was found for plant height and stem straightness with biomass characters. Principal component analysis revealed that total fresh weight and total dry weight were the largest contributor towards the total genetic diversity exhibited by Salix clones and thus needs to be given due weightage while selection.
