Abstract
A field experiment was conducted on sandy loam soil at the E.C.F.P. Unit-5 Farm, Gujarat Agricultural University, Anand Campus, Anand during Kharif season of 2001-2002 to study the effect of PSB inoculation, phosphorus and sulphur on yield and quality of clusterbean [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert] under middle Gujarat conditions. The Gujarat guar-l variety of clusterbean was selected. The soil of the experimental plot was low in nitrogen, medium in phosphorus, high in potash and medium in sulphur with pH 7.6. Eighteen (18) treatment combinations of two levels of PSB inoculation (no inoculation and inoculation), three levels of phosphorus (0, 20 and 40 kg P2O5 ha-1) and three levels of sulphur (0, 20 and 40 kg S ha-1) were tried in randomized block with factorial concept and replicated three times. One common irrigation and 20 kg N ha-1 through Urea as basal dose was given to all plots for initial establishment of the crop. Inoculation of clusterbean seeds with PSB culture (Bacillus coagulance strain PBA-16) significantly influenced the plant height, number of branches plant-1 , pods plant-1, seed yield plant-1 , husk yield and stalk yield (kg ha-1 ), harvest index, N, P and S content of seed, protein content, protein yield, gum content and gum yield of clusterbean. Higher seed yield (1418.26 kg ha-1), husk yield (422.96 kg ha-1) and stalk yield (2757.04 kg ha-1) were obtained from seed inoculation with PSB than no inoculation. However, it showed non-significant effect on 1000-seed weight, potash content of seed and N, P, K and S content of stover. Application of phosphoiTJS @ 40 kg P2O5 ha-1 recorded significantly higher seed yield (1583.11 kg ha-1), husk yield (479.17 kg ha-1) and stalk yield (2868.83 kg ha') over control. Phosphorus application also significantly influenced all the growth and yield attributing characters viz. Plant height, number of branches plant-1, pods planf-1, seeds pod-1, pod length, seed yield plant-1 and harvest index. However, it showed non-significant effect on 1000-seed weight. It also significantly increased the N, P, K and S content of seed and stover, protein content, protein yield, gum content and gum yield of clusterbean. Significantly higher seed yield (1609.56 kg ha-1), husk yield (485.28 kg ha-1) and stalk yield (2981.78 kg ha-1) were recorded under the application of sulphur @ 40 kg S ha-1 over 20 kg S ha-1 and 0 kg S ha-1. Application of sulphur also significantly influenced the plant height, number of branches plant-1, pods planf-1, seeds pod-1, pod length, seed yield planf-1, harvest index, N, P, K and S content of seed and stover, protein content, protein yield, gum content and gum yield of clusterbean. During the course of investigation, interaction PSB X P significantly influenced the phosphorus content of seed whereas, interaction P X S significantly influenced the number of branches plant-1, pods plant-1, seed yield planf-1, seed yield (kg ha-1), husk yield (kg ha-1) and phosphorus and sulphur content of seed. Looking to the economics of different treatment combinations, the combinations I1 P2 S2 (seed inoculation + 40 kg P2O5 ha-1 + 40 kg S ha-1), I0P2 S2 (40 kg P2O5 ha-1 + 40 kg S ha-1) and I1 P2 S1 (seed inoculation + 40 kg P2O5 ha-1 + 20 kg S ha-1) recorded the maximum profit (Rs. 14584, Rs. 13469 and Rs. 11716 ha-1, respectively) as well as CBR (1:3.09, 1:2.93 and 1:2.77, respectively).
