Abstract
To evaluate efficacy of medicinal herb, Neem (Azadirachta indica) in common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., Neem Leaf Extract (NLE) was supplemented in the diet @ 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2 g kg-1 basal diet. Feed without NLE served as control. The study was carried out in outdoor tanks, where common carp fry (stocked @ 10,000 fry ha-1) were fed with experimental diets for 180 days. NLE did not affect water quality and nutrient status, however NLE enhanced both phytoplankton and zooplankton population, further among phytoplankton and zooplankton chlorophyceae and copepod were dominant group respectively. Significantly higher fish growth was recorded in NLE fed groups (P≤0.05), but maximum growth in terms of net weight gain and specific growth rate was recorded in fish fed on diet having NLE @1.0 g kg-1. NLE improved flesh quality of fish in terms of higher protein content at all NLE incorporation levels. Significantly low GSI was recorded in fish fed on diet having NLE @ 1.0 g kg-1, which revealed that NLE supplementation in the feed have an anti-fertility effect in common carp. Better immunity in terms of higher TEC Count, TLC count, Haemoglobin, PCV, serum total proteins, albumin and globulin concentrations, Phagocytic activity, Respiratory burst activity (NBT activity), Serum bactericidal activity, Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), Glutathione reductase (GR) and lower MCV, MCH and Lipid peroxidation (LPO) was recorded in fish fed on diet having NLE @1.0 g kg-1. Overall, the results indicate positive effect of NLE on fish growth, flesh quality and immunity of fish. Further, its anti-fertility effect may also check the prolific breeding of fish especially in aquaculture.
