Abstract
The impact of nutrition interventions on the nutritional profile of children inflicted with celiac disease was evaluated by selecting 30 celiac children (1-9 years), from SPS Apollo Hospital, Ludhiana. The requisite data were collected using personal interview schedule. An educational material was prepared in the form of a booklet -“Understanding Celiac Disease” covering various aspects of celiac disease. The nutrition interventions like personal counselling, education through lecture-cum-discussion using electronic media, demonstration of standardised gluten free recipes were imparted to the parents for three months. The impact was assessed in the terms of improvement in the dietary intake, anthropometric and haematological profile of the subjects and knowledge level of the parents. The findings revealed that the disease was more pronounced in girls than boys (2.75:1).A significant improvement was observed in the nutrient intake of the subjects, the diet still remained deficient in β carotene, vitamins B-complex and C, iron and calcium. The intake of energy, protein and fat content were found to be adequate after the interventions. Malnutrition was observed to be highly prevalent. The percentage of stunted children (63.33%) remained the same. However, a significant decrease was observed in percentage of underweight (86.77 to 63.33%) and wasting (73.33to 43.33%). Though a significant increase was observed in the mean haemoglobin level of the subjects (8.58 to 9.52 g/dl), yet it remained below 11.5g/dl. A significant improvement was also recorded in the knowledge level of the parents with an increase in the percentage scores from 55.04 to 69.04 per cent. Overall, the nutrition interventions showed a positive impact on the nutritional status of the subjects. The present study recommended having an extended follow up to further improve the nutritional profile of celiac children
