dc.description.abstractThe present investigation was carried out at the Division of Vegetable Crops, IIHR, Bengaluru during 2014-15. Chilli is an indispensable commodity in Indian cuisine for its pungency, color and flavor. To understand the genetic variability associated with fruit quality traits in Capsicum sp., 22 genotypes were evaluated for nine quantitative characters viz., fruit length & width, pericarp thickness, placenta length & width, TSS, fruit to seed ratio, seed number and total capsaicinoids. Cluster analysis of the data has grouped the genotypes into three clusters and the trait, total capsaicinoids has contributed maximum towards divergence. Genetic variance, heritability and genetic advance for the fruit quality traits were studied. The analysis of variance showed significant differences among the genotypes for all the characters studied. The high GCV and PCV were observed for fruit length & width, placenta length & width, TSS, fruit to seed ratio, seed number and total capsaicinoids. Heritability was high in these characters except for TSS. Low to moderate genetic advance coupled with high heritability was observed for fruit length & width, pericarp thickness, placenta length & width and fruit to seed ratio. While seed number and total capsaicinoids showed high heritability and genetic advance. The correlation studied among backcross populations revealed superiority over the parent, IHR 3476 for 3 traits such as TSS, fruit to seed ratio and total capsaicinoids. The mean performance of backcrosses populations was also found superior for the parameters like fruit length &width, pericarp thickness and fruit to seed ratio as compared to the variety IHR4501.en_US
