Abstract
Agriculture plays an important role in growth of developing countries like India where
agriculture contributes around 17.8 % Gross Domestic Products in the year 2019. Also,
according to 2011 census of India, 54.65 % of people are directly or indirectly working
in agriculture sector. The small and marginal land holding if taken together it
contributes around 86.21 % of total land holding in 2015-16. Small holding agriculture
being the critical feature, is important for raising agriculture growth, food security and
livelihoods in India. Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) refer to independent, non governmental, membership-based rural organizations of part or fulltime self-employed
smallholders and family farmers, pastoralists, artisanal fishers, landless people, women,
small entrepreneurs and indigenous peoples. The collectivization of farmers through
producer organizations (PO) can benefit from economies of scale, increased bargaining
power and reduced information costs. In addition, through enhanced economies of scale
and bargaining power, farmers are able to negotiate better terms of trade.
