Comparative analysis of antioxidant capacity of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) at different temperatures in polytunnel

dc.description.abstractThe present investigation was aimed to study the effect of high temperature (HT) stress on antioxidant defense system in two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars raised in polytunnel house fitted with five sensors maintained at different temperatures. Various sensors were tuned to temperature of +3.0˚C (S1), +3.2˚C (S2), +3.3˚C (S3), +3.5˚C (S4), +3.6˚C (S5), above the ambient temperatures of 20˚C (flag leaf, 90 days after sowing; DAS) and 22˚C (grains, 15 and 30 days post anthesis; DPA). Various biochemical and morpho-physiological parameters were recorded in flag leaf and grains in two wheat cultivars HD 2967 (heat tolerant) and PBW 702 (heat sensitive) at different stages of grain development. Plant growth was largely depressed due to HT which resulted in disruption of cellular membrane by increasing membrane injury index, lipid peroxide and H2O2 contents. High temperature stress caused significant increase in activity of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and contents of proline, ascorbic acid, glutathione and H2O2 in flag leaf (90 DAS) and developing grains (15 and 30 DPA). Maximum increase in antioxidant enzymes was observed in heat tolerant cv. HD 2967 at S5 (+3.6˚C) sensor. Apparently, heat tolerant cultivar HD 2967 possessed lower content of lipid peroxide and chlorophyll of owing to better expression of antioxidant system. Increasing temperature above ambient in the tunnel caused a marked increase in relative membrane injury and H2O2 contents and rise in these attributes caused significant membrane injury in PBW 702. Taken overall, the performance of cultivar HD 2967 was better over PBW 702 in terms of lesser oxidative damage and greater cellular levels of ascorbate, glutathione and proline.en_US
