EVALUATION OF DIFFERENT BREEDING PROVISIONS FOR THEIR ACCEPTANCE BY BIRDS

Abstract
To understand the impact of diminished/altered habitat of birds due to deforestation in agroecosystem of Punjab, the occurrence and abundance of birds was studied in dense tree cover area and evaluation of different breeding provisions for their acceptance by birds was carried out. Total count of birds recorded from June 2009-May 2010 was 1927 including 19 bird species. The number being higher (302) in August and lower (35) in December and higher in evening than morning. Common Myna was dominant species in this area. Species richness was maximum (16) in August and minimum (8) in October and January. Species diversity and evenness also varied throughout the year in this area. The open nests were not found in dense tree cover area of Japanese garden but five nest holes occupied by Rose Ringed Parakeet were recorded in February, March and April on Dhek and Silver oak. Out of the three breeding provisions; wooden boxes, earthen pots with/without tunnel in set of ten installed on different trees in dense tree cover area, only the wooden boxes installed at the height of 10-14 ft were accepted by Common Myna, Magpie Robin and Spotted Owlet. Out of ten boxes, five were occupied by Common Myna in each of breeding seasons i.e. June to September and February to May while only one box each, was occupied by Magpie Robin and Spotted Owlet. The breeding success was 93.1% in case of Common Myna with normal clutch size and breeding behaviour. Key Words: Birds, Community structure, Natural nesting and breeding provisions.
