Fifteen genotypes of mungbean were evaluated for their performance for different viability and vigour parameters viz. standard germination, seedling length, seed weight, seed density, vigour index-I, vigour index-II, accelerated ageing test, electrical conductivity, tetrazolium test, dehydrogenase activity test, field emergence index and seedling establishment to assess the effect of planting season on seed quality. Significant mean squares values showed the wide variability among the genotypes and seasons for all the parameters studied. Among the genotypes MH 729, followed by MH 736 and MH2-15 have the top rank for almost all the vigour and viability parameters except electrical conductivity which showed the lower value indicating their superiority in both the season(summer and kharif). On the contrary, genotype MH 534 found to be inferior for most of the viability and vigour parameters. Among the seasons, seed produced in summer season showed superiority over kharif. Maximum hard seed were observed in genotype MH421 (22.00) followed by MH125 (19.33) and the lowest in genotype MH810 (8.00). Seed obtained from the crop raised during kharif season showed maximum number of hard seeds ranging from 11.00 to 33.00 as compared to summer raised crop (2.67-14.00). Standard germination and seedling establishment were found significantly and positively correlated with all the seed quality parameters except electrical conductivity in both the seasons. Electrical conductivity was found significantly and negatively associated with all parameters studied in lab and field. Therefore, it is concluded that tetrazolium test, electrical conductivity test and dehydrogenase activity test can be used as a quick reliable predictor of standard germination and seedling establishment in mungbean and summer season could be considered better option for the production of basic seed.en_US
