dc.description.abstractA field experiment on “Qualities of wine as influenced by cane regulation and crop load of wine grape varieties grown under northern dry zone of Karnataka” was carried out during 2017-2019 at grape orchard, MHREC, UHS, Bagalkot. Among the varieties, Medika found to be superior over other varieties with respect to shoot length (80.05cm), shoot girth (8.57 mm), bunch length (24.37cm), bunch weight (399.18 g), yield (16.63 kg/vine, 36.96 t/ha), TSS (22.23 oBrix), TSS to acid ratio (49.82), brix yield (8.74 o Brix), total sugar (21.09%) and wine quality parameters like ethanol (13.63%), phenol (172.21 mg/100 ml) and overall acceptability. In white varieties, Chenin Blanc exhibited superiority with respect to quality parameters. Vine regulated with 25 canes per vine exhibited superiority with respect to shoot length(77.45cm) shoot girth (8.21 mm), bunch length (20.08cm), bunch weight (319.94 g), berry diameter (14.42 mm), berry fresh weight (2.20 g), TSS (21.39 o Brix), TSS to acid ratio (49.90), brix yield (6.99 o Brix), total sugar (20.87%), ethanol (12.45%), phenol (101.85 mg/100 ml) and tannin (40.62 mg/100 ml) and the highest score for wine overall acceptability (17.58). Vines regulated at 20 bunches per vine was found to be superior over other treatments with respect to bunch length (20.28cm), bunch weight (344.85 g), berry length (15.62 mm), diameter (14.76 mm), weight (2.26 g), TSS (21.82 oB), TSS to acid ratio (50.18), brix yield (7.17o B), total sugar (20.76%), ethanol (12.52%), phenol (102.59 mg/100 ml), tannin (40.62 mg/100 ml) and the highest score for overall acceptability (17.92). The combined effect between the levels of cane regulation and bunch thinning was found to be superior with respect bunch length, weight, berry weight, ethanol and phenol in vines regulated at 25 canes with 20 bunches/vine in both Medika and Chenin Blanc cultivars. Vines regulated at 25 canes with 20 bunches per vine produced the good quality grapes for preparing quality wine, even though these treatments recorded lower yield than the control. From the study, it can be clearly stated as, cane regulation and bunch thinning is essential form of thinning in vineyard operation and considered as a technique which could lead to tremendous improvement in quality parameters of wine grapes and helpful for quality wine production.en_US
